Healthy Herds for a Sustainable Future: Overcoming Barriers to Better Cattle Health

Healthier cattle are essential to a more sustainable beef sector, but too often, the tools that can deliver progress aren’t being used to their full potential. Adoption of vaccines remains low in many regions and financing for animal health is scarce, with just 0.01–0.02% of global climate finance directed toward this area. And promising new innovations, including those with clear sustainability benefits, face uncertain pathways to market.

This session will look at the technologies and beyond to ask: what needs to happen to unlock the potential of cattle health? Experts will explore the barriers that are holding back adoption and the policies, financing, and enabling conditions required to accelerate change. The session builds on the recent joint report from HealthforAnimals and GRSB on Healthy Herds for Sustainable Production.

What to Expect

  • Big Picture: Why healthier cattle are key to sustainable beef

  • Barriers to Adoption: Low uptake of proven tools like vaccines, gaps in financing, and trade challenges

  • Policies & Pathways: What policy changes and enabling conditions are needed to bring new innovations to market

  • Q&A: Your chance to engage directly with the experts

Audiences will come away with a clear understanding of the systemic changes, across policy, finance, and the value chain, that are needed to ensure animal health innovations deliver sustainability at scale.
